About Thanima
“Festivals promote diversity, they bring neighbours into dialogue, they increase creativity, they offer opportunities for civic pride, they improve our general psychological well-being. In short, they make cities better places to live.” – David Binder
Essentially, the harvest festival of Kerala brings about a general sense of unity among all the Malayalis, overcoming barriers, obstacles and boundaries, all of us come together as one to celebrate this joyous occasion. This harvesting festival represents the home-coming of the mythical demon-king Maveli, celebrated on the first day of the Chingam month, which is the first month in the Malayalam calendar, Kollavarsham. The Onam celebrations, here at VIT, is celebrated through ‘Thanima’. Thanima was first conducted in the year 2002 and thus was set into motion, the legacy of this wonderful and auspicious celebration. Each year our celebrations are aggrandized by the presence of dignified personalities such as Vineeth Sreenivasan, Swetha Menon, Shri. K. B. Ganesh Kumar, Deepak Dev, Shri. G Karthikeyan, Siddhi Mahajankatti, Vayalar Ravi (MP), Marina Michael Kurisingal etc. The Thanima festivities are also accompanied by various Sporting and Cultural events that boost up morale, companionship, sportsmanship, creativity and togetherness of the entire community. It is a visual treat to witness all these art forms and tradition being exhibited in all its vigour in such a grand stage. This visual spectacle is also a ground for the most renowned Onasadhya which is the grand feast, quite like no other. The multitude of flavours that strike our taste buds and sends it into a nostalgic frenzy is one of the most delightful parts of the Thanima celebration. Thanima brings together this entire community and gives us the opportunity to explore how as malayalis we should be proud about our culture. Besides being a celebration, Thanima has found its way into becoming a pillar of support for those who are in need which includes medical aids during floods, activities such as tree planting and much more.
Thanima 2020
As the tale goes, Maveli was granted a single wish from Vishnu – To come forth to his kingdom and see his people. The people of the Kerala.
Thus follows the legend of Onam – The Apex of Festivities in our God’s Own Country, where people come together as one, united by the spirit of Onam.
Inculcating the spirit of this legend, we, the students of VIT have organised Onam celebrations almost every year. This helps in bringing together the entire Malayali community under one roof. This year has been nothing but a bag of disheartening surprises and as the curtains drop on all the traditional festivities and people become glued to the incessant inevitability of dwindling hope and the ever so escalating air of eerie despair, we have charted out the plan to revive the spirits and to break this chain of inactivity.
Thanima 2k20 Live embodies the spirit of previous Thanima yet puts forth the entirely avant-garde concept of the Event being conducted online. It shall completely shatter the preconceived notions of online events and will set a new standard for such events in the future. All the Events and competitions shall be completely online and will be conducted in a pattern wherein people don’t feel threatened about their safety. All Thanima 2k20 events and competitions shall have rewards and manifest the feeling of recouping ethos of what Onam means to each one of us. Although we are separated, locked away in different corners, all of us shall be brought together on this festive occasion to enlighten our spirits through the staggering exhibition of Dance, Music, Art and culture.
Let this festive season of colours, lights, happiness and oneness be scintillating once again and let it not be ‘masked’ behind this menacing visitor. The radiance of Thanima 2020 shall be the beacon of hope for all VIT students in these testing times.

Thanima is a recreation of Onam celebration in VIT, which focuses on joy, happiness and togetherness among students from all faith and caste. I still remember my first thanima which was in 2016, the goosebumps when I heard Malayalam hit songs in a different state after a long time elicited the malayali in me. It's an incarnation of Kerala with Pookkalam, tug of war, Thiruvathira, other cultural events and sadhya which is my favorite part... in all it's a festive day. The vibe and bond that I got from thanima is still my strength even after leaving VIT.

Thanima is like taking a ride to Kerala. The splendid feast made from the scratch, the intricate flower carpet, the sensational tug-of-war, the exciting games and fun filled cultural performances, bustling sleepless nights of planning and practicing and not to mention our ladies and men in the gorgeous traditional attire gliding across the campus made Thanima my favourite. I treasure those days as we celebrated our friendship and established our unity as proud Keralites. And as the big day of Thanima 2016 came, I was happier than ever because as a team under the guidance of Prof. Naiju CD, we created a memorable day for all VITians to cherish.

Every Onam celebration is a memorable part of a Malayalee and out of all those festive occasions, the one that I cherish the most is Thanima. Our collaboration for the program was effortless. It was a day that every Malayalee in the campus longed for. The intimacy we shared with every participant, faculties and management was vast. The enthusiasm to expend our time for the permissions, decorations, cultural programs, games and other competitions for the success of the event was peerless. Finally, on that auspicious day the vivacity of each individual is inexpressible. I feel privileged to have been one of the students who organized the program. One of those days I wish I could relive.

Thanima was that one event I always looked up to, every year, all throughout my college life. The excitement that I had for Onam festival was far superseded by what I felt for our very own Onam celebration and this was an emotion every Malayalee student at VIT shared. The happiness in wearing the traditional shirt and Munde(dhoti), the joy of clicking numerous pictures with friends and faculty, the eagerness to eat the delicious Sadhya, the adrenaline rush from cheering for our favorite team in the sports events, the anxiety before performing on stage, the fun dancing sessions together in the auditorium and the sense of pride in having helped to organize such an event made Thanima, for me, a scintillating experience which I will always cherish.

When it comes to Thanima, the VIT malayalees never misses a beat in getting behind it. If there's one day, we will be looking forward to, and back to, that’s Thanima. It’s an emotion that brews in every single Malayali VITians’s heart, rich in experience with the harmony, synchrony, and elegance in every moment of it. That adrenaline rush you get on the stage, dancing for one of those classic Malayalam songs, that never ending excitement to get infinite pictures in your traditional look with your loved ones, that spirit you get to arrange the most attractive floral carpet, satisfying an year-long cravings for an onasadya and what not! It’s like one of those traditional handovers from the seniors that will be passed on to every incoming batch, that one day which cannot be looked back without an extent of pride.

Thanima is one of the most joyful festivities of VIT. Being a traditional keralite it was always hard to imagine missing Onam ,coming to study in Tamil Nadu. But THANIMA Onam celebrations always made me feel at home. It represents all the true values taught to us, which is our culture and unity. Being the cultural coordinator for 4 years were some of the best memories of my college life. It brings a lot of fond memories about late night practices, pookalams, sports, sadhyas and many more. Thanima gets bigger with every passing year and I’m sure in the future it will help all the keralite kids coming to VIT to stay in touch with their malayali side.
